Shop Safety

The number one priority of all shop classes is for nobody to get hurt. Safety is emphasized continually within all CHS shops. Students are required to learn and exhibit the proper safety procedures and behaviors. Students do NOT have the right or discretion to work in an unsafe manner. Each and every day all students must work safely.

Basic Four Safety Rules that apply to all tools in the shop

Plus Two More

1.  Students must wear safety glasses at all times when anyone is using tools anywhere in the shop.

2. Keep all body parts at least 2" away from sharp or moving tools and parts of tools.

3. Confine any long hair, baggy clothing, ID tags, and jewelry before using tools.

4. Always ask the question: "What if". What if my hand slips right now?  Will I get cut?  We do not rely on luck or coordination at any time! Students must realize that their hands and bodies may slip or stumble at times, and that they should actually plan for this to happen from time to time.

5. Always pay attention to what you are doing. Concentrate only on the job at hand.

6.  Always make sure that the tool and surrounding area are ready for use. Make sure that the tool is set at the proper height and angle. Make sure that the area around the tool is clear of debris.

Tool Write-Ups

Students must complete a tool write-up and turn it in before they are allowed to use any stationary power tool. Write-ups are completed during tool demonstrations and turned in for checking immediately after the lesson is finished. Write-ups are NOT ever copied. A student missing a write-up demonstration will be asked to complete the assignment out of the textbook. It is highly recommended to never miss a day when there will be a demonstration or lesson taught. (This would be each and every day.)
