Dear Students and Parents,                                                             January 27, 2012

MATH
We have finally begun taking multiplication timed tests. The tests are divided into 4 sections…(0-3), (4-6), (7-9) and (Big Test). The first three tests have 42 problems and the Big Test (0-9) have 70 problems. I will let you know when we begin our division facts. Everyone needs to continue to practice multiplication fact cards…they will need to be memorized for 4th grade.

Reading

We will be reading “Two Days in May” next week. The vocabulary & story tests will be Thursday. The spelling and DOL tests will be Friday.

TIMED TESTS
We have really jumped in to taking the Multiplication Timed Tests. Many students are on 4’s – 6’s. It will take PRACTICE. Students can use class time to practice, but they will also need to STUDY AT HOME. Please purchase multiplication & division fact cards or you can make them with index cards. ALL STUDENTS will need them to study!

ISAT PRACTICE
During the month of February, we will be completing Illinois Standards Achievement Tests (ISAT) Practice tests following all of the ISAT rules. I am NOT teaching to the test, but since this is the first year the kiddos will be taking standardized tests, I want them to get familiar with testing procedures and the time frame they are allowed. Keep in mind that we discuss ISAT’s, test taking procedures, time limits and test taking strategies ALL YEAR!
Students DO NOT need to stress out during tests, but they need to do their very best to show what they have learned so far (K thru this year).  Please send an e-mail or note if you have any concerns.

I.S.A.T. Volunteers
Volunteers are needed! Each year I ask for parents to volunteer to bring in a healthy snack and drink for each day during I.S.A.T. testing. Having a healthy snack helps them feel a little more comfortable while making sure they are not hungry during testing. I ask for low sugar items as sugar tends to make us a bit more active...past snacks have been Cheeze-Its, Animal Crackers, Gold Fish, Granola bars, grapes/bananas, etc. Milk, juice with low sugar or bottled water are good choices for drinks. Please send a note or call if you are interested in volunteering. The days needed are Tuesday, March 6th through Friday, March 9th. Thank you! PS...I can store snack/drinks in my room if they do not need to be refrigerated…so you can bring them in early (closer to ISAT’s)!

VALENTINE’S DAY
Please do not forget to bring in ONE WRAPPED box NO LATER THAN Monday, Feb. 6th. Also, students will need to bring in items to decorate their boxes…items might include sequence, stickers, string, fuzzy balls, doilies, etc. NO LOSE GLITTER! I will also have a few items to share with the kids.

SCIENCE
We will continue to learn about the Solar System. We have begun writing informational paragraphs about the different planets in our Solar System Books. Woo Hoo!

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students are continuing to learn about the White House and Washington D.C.
