Award Winning 2006-2007 Latin Club Members at Pekin High School |
|
| The Collinsville High School Latin
Club is part the Illinois Junior Classical League (IJCL) and the National Junior Classical
League (NJCL). With 112 members, it is the largest Latin Club in Illinois and ranks
among the tops in the country. It has been recognized the past 22 years by the
National Junior Classical League for exceeding the century mark in membership. As one of the most active organizations at Collinsville High School, the Latin Club competes annually at the Illinois Junior Classical League Convention. Top Latin students at CHS also take the National Latin Exam and participate in the Illinois State Latin Tournament. In the spring, Latin students compete in the Foreign Language Bowl competition at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in both the upper and lower divisions. Third and fourth year Latin students who have straight A's in Latin and an A cumulative grade point average are initiated into the Latin Honor Society. At the local level, the Latin Club competes in the World Cup Foreign Language Club Soccer Tournament and the Foreign Language Bowling Tournament, competing against the Spanish, French, and German Clubs at CHS. The Latin Club most recently won the Foreign Language Club Soccer Tournament in 2006. The main event at the end of the year is the Roman Banquet. First year Latin Club members serve as slaves. Entertainment in the form of skits, music, and dance are provided by the upperclassmen. The Latin Club has sponsored four overseas trips in the past 13 years. They have traveled to Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, and Greece. Popular sightseeing places have been the Colosseum and Forum in Rome; Vatican City; Mt. Vesuvius and the excavations in Pompeii; and the Parthenon and Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It is the purpose of the Collinsville's Latin Club to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world which is indebted to the ancient civilization in its government and laws, literature, language, and arts. |
