Character Education
Character education is the heart of John Renfro Elementary School. Renfro School focuses on the ten CUSD character traits, Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, Cooperation, Courtesy, Self-Control, Trustworthiness, Positivity, Caring and Integrity.
Our hallways and classrooms display our enthusiasm for each trait. We have weekly morning assemblies to highlight the monthly trait. Every classroom participates in performing a skit, song, movie, play or other demonstrative activity at least once during the school year.
Students vote for a theme for the school year and each class chooses a class name in relation to the theme and there is a parade of classroom banners at one of the first assemblies of the year.
Fourth grade students are elected to a Character Council and create a monthly character education newsletter (The Raptor Gazette), which includes a Homeside Activity. A Homeside Activity is designed for parent/family member to draw or write about the monthly trait. It encourages family participation in the character education program.
Service learning projects are an integral part of the character education program at Renfro. Students vote on various charitable opportunities. All year students contribute services, collections and donations toward selected causes. Fourth grade students on the Student Service Learning Team become leaders in keeping track of the status of our school goals.
