One Minute Fluency Check

To help your child practice and improve in reading fluency you may give them a One Minute Fluency Check at home.

            1. Select a reading passage at your child's reading level.
            2. Set a timer for 1 minute.
            3. While your child is reading the passage keep track of any errors they make.  You may not help them
with any words as they are reading. They need to try to figure them out or skip over them.
            4. Mark the word they stopped with at the 1 minute mark.
            5. Count the number of words they read and then subtract the number of errors they made.
This will give you the number of words per minute (WPM) you child is reading.
            6. You may have your child use the same passage throughout the week. Have them place a sticky note where
they stopped.   Their goal is the continually move that sticky note farther down the page as their fluency improves.

First Quarter Goal- 53 to 82 WPM

Mid- Year Goal - 78 to 106 WPM

End of the Year Goal- 94 to 124 WPM

Spelling Self-Test

One of our second grade goals is to help our students become more independent and responsible, while instilling some helpful study techniques.

If getting your student to study spelling words is becoming a problem, make them responsible for the task. Invest in a small tape player that records voice. Have your child say their spelling words into the tape player leaving a short pause between each word. They can then give themselves the spelling test by pressing play and then pausing when they need to write the word. They can also self-check their test against the spelling list. I do recommend, that they complete this activity within an observable range of a parent to ensure they are truly testing themselves.

DOLCH Sight Words

50-75% of all words used in school books, library books, newspapers, and magazines are in the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary of 220 words (preschool thru Grade 3).  The Dolch word list is made up of "service words" (pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and verbs) which cannot be learned through the use of pictures.
