Parents Page
This
page serves as a parent's guide to helping you help your student succeed in math as well
as other subjects.
To help facilitate your student's homework, make sure they have a well-lit, quiet place. Ensure they have all the materials required to complete the assignment; for example, when working with angles, students will need a compass and protractor. It helps some students to have quiet music playing in the background. Have them study in the same place and at the same time every night. (i.e. when they get home from school; right after supper, etc.)
Look over your student's homework every night. Even if you don't know the answers, (after all, you aren't the one in school!), it creates accountability for your student and let's them know that you care about their education.
Make sure your student is in school EVERY day. One lost day is a mountain of information that is lost.
Have your student regularly review what he/she has learned in previous sections. It only needs to be a few minutes each day, but it has a huge payoff when it is test time.
Take your student grocery shopping with you. Have them determine how much one ounce
of something is. Have them estimate how much the groceries will cost. Have
your student do the same real-world math as you are doing, i.e. measuring and fractions
when you cook, estimating the cost of utilities; the opportunities are limited only by
you!
