WELLNESS PROGRAM:  Be Active, Eat Smart

 

The Collinsville Unit School District #10 Wellness Team would like to let you know about a new and exciting program.  In accordance with Illinois state regulations and the current district wellness policy, the wellness team is actively working on improving the status of staff and student wellness in our schools.  The committee will address physical fitness, nutrition, and education as it relates to these areas.  Our focus for this next school year is to initiate ways for staff and students to become more active during the school day.  As a team, we are very excited and anxious to get the ball rolling.  We will also be establishing building based committees to initiate activities that are age and building specific.

 

The Purpose of the District Wellness Team

To educate staff, students, parents, and community about fitness and nutrition

To increase staff and student daily activity levels during the school day

To encourage staff and students to make good nutritional food choices

To develop methods to combat the rising incidence of childhood obesity in the US

 

OBESITY IN CHILDHOOD

Between 1980 and 2002, overweight prevalence TRIPLED in children and adolescents aged 6 years to 19 years.

 

More than 25% of American children are considered clinically obese (20% over ideal weight).

 

From 1995 to 2000:

The prevalence of children ages 6 to 11 years considered obese has risen from 11% to 15%.  This represents a 4% increase in less than 5 years.

 

Overweight teens have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.

 

Health Risks Associated with Obesity:

Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Stroke

 

Research indicates 61% of overweight 5 to 10 year-olds already have risk factors for heart disease, and 26% have two or more risk factors.

 

ACTIVITY increases the blood flow, and therefore, the oxygen flow to the brain.  This increases concentration, comprehension, and memory.
